REPLICA German Ww1 M-16 Style Helmet

Condition: NEW
Code:HM0002
A replica of German WW1 M-16 style helmet or Stahlhelm (German for "Steel helmet")

Like the French and British the German military in WW1 quickly saw the need to replace the light weight head wear they started the war with and started the process to replace the traditional boiled leather Pickelhaube that had been in use by the Prussian army since 1842, with something that offered more protections from the dangers of the modern battlefield.
The Stahlhelm German military helmet was introduced into regular service during the Verdun campaign in early 1916 in response to the significant increase in head injuries suffered by troops due to the much more lethal artillery and grenades employed during the trench warfare that developed.

The Stahlhelm is broadly based on the 15th-century sallet helmet, which provided good protection for the head and neck.  Considered by many to provide the best protection of the helmets during WW1 it was significantly more expensive and time consuming to make compared to the British Brodie helmet and was not without its flaws. For instance the large, flared skirt tended to make it difficult for soldiers to hear, distorting surrounding sounds and creating an echo when the wearer spoke and the ventilator horns often let cold air in during the winter, requiring the wearer to block the vents with mud or fabric.

The German Stahlhelm, with its distinctive "coal scuttle" shape, was instantly recognizable and became a common element of propaganda on both sides, just like the Pickelhaube before it.  The helmet became synonymous with the German military and was retained and enhanced for use during WW2 and beyond.  The M-16 design had side-mounted horn-like ventilator lugs which were intended to be support for an additional steel brow plate or Stirnpanzer, which only ever saw limited use by snipers, machine gun operators and trench raiding parties, as it was too heavy for general use.
