An essential but often overlooked component of the German soldier's uniform, the grey-green Wehrmacht undershirt was issued as a standard base layer throughout much of the Second World War. Worn beneath the Feldbluse field tunic, it provided warmth, comfort and protection against the harsh climates encountered across Europe, from the freezing winters of the Eastern Front to the damp conditions of Western Europe.
As the war progressed, Germany moved away from the earlier white undershirts in favour of a more practical grey-green (Feldgrau) version that better complemented the field uniform. Designed for everyday military service, these garments featured a pullover construction with a four-button front placket, a soft turn-down collar, long sleeves with button-adjustable cuffs and an extra-long body that remained securely tucked into the trousers during prolonged periods of movement. The simple yet durable design allowed soldiers to regulate ventilation while reducing wear on the outer wool tunic.
Unlike modern military clothing produced by a single manufacturer, original Wehrmacht undershirts were made by numerous German textile factories under military contract. Companies such as J. Schmid Talif produced garments alongside many other contractors, each applying factory stamps identifying the manufacturer, size and production details. Variations in stitching, fabric, button style and internal markings are a normal characteristic of genuine wartime production and reflect the realities of manufacturing during a period of rapidly increasing military demand.
Following Germany's surrender in 1945, production ceased and remaining stocks were widely reused throughout post-war Europe during a time of severe clothing shortages.
