Following Federation on 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth Government held a competition to find a flag design for the newly united nation. More than 32,000 entries were submitted, and five nearly identical designs were selected as joint winners. The winning blue ensign was first flown above Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building on 3 September 1901, when the results were announced. The design was subsequently refined, with the Commonwealth Star gaining a seventh point in 1908 to represent Australia's territories. The Australian National Flag was formally recognised under the Flags Act 1953, which received Royal Assent in 1954.

The Union Jack in the upper hoist corner acknowledges Australia's historical links with Britain. Beneath it, the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star represents the six states and the territories.
