The Commonwealth Star, located under the Union Jack is also known as the Federation Star and its seven points represent the shared unity of the six states and the territories of the Australian Commonwealth.  The Southern Cross is one of the most distinct constellations in the southern hemisphere and is used on the flag as a reminder of Australia’s geography.
