Heavy Duty Eureka Flag (Large) 5'x3' by OUTBOUND

Condition: NEW
Code:FL0016H

The OUTBOUND Heavy Duty Eureka Flag reproduces one of the most recognisable and historically significant flags in Australian history. Featuring the white Southern Cross on a blue field, the Eureka Flag is closely associated with the miners' rebellion at Ballarat in 1854 and the subsequent development of democratic reform in Victoria.

The original flag was first raised at a Ballarat Reform League meeting at Bakery Hill on 29 November 1854. The gathering, attended by thousands of miners and supporters, was held during growing opposition to the colonial government's administration of the Victorian goldfields, particularly the unpopular monthly mining licence system and the conduct of police licence hunts. The flag was subsequently taken to the Eureka diggings and flown above the miners' stockade.

On 3 December 1854, government troops attacked the Eureka Stockade. The battle lasted only a short time, but the events became an important part of Australian history. The surviving original flag was reportedly taken as a souvenir by police trooper John King after the attack. It eventually came into the possession of the Art Gallery of Ballarat and is now on long-term loan to the Eureka Centre, where it is displayed near the site of the original stockade.

The original Eureka Flag is approximately 2.6 metres high and 4 metres wide and was made from cotton and wool. It has lost sections over the years, with pieces removed as souvenirs. The identity of its designer and makers remains debated. Evidence and tradition have variously associated its design with Canadian miner Henry Charles Ross and its construction with Anne Duke, Anastasia Hayes and Anastasia Withers, while an alternative theory attributes its manufacture to professional tentmakers. The Eureka Centre states that none of these accounts has been conclusively proven.

The Eureka Flag has continued to be interpreted in different ways since 1854. The National Museum of Australia identifies it as an early Australian flag that used the Southern Cross without the Union Jack, while the Australian Government notes its importance as an early distinctive Australian flag design. Over time, the Eureka Flag has also been adopted by trade unions and a wide range of groups and individuals, giving it a complex and sometimes contested place in Australian public life.

This OUTBOUND reproduction provides a practical way to display the distinctive Eureka design while recognising its connection to the Ballarat goldfields, the Eureka Stockade and an important chapter in Australia's history.
