The red-white-red design has a long history in Austria and is among the country's oldest national symbols. Its origins are traditionally associated with the Babenberg dynasty, which ruled Austria during the Middle Ages. The familiar legend attributes the design to Duke Leopold V during the Siege of Acre in 1191, claiming that his white tunic became covered in blood except for the area protected by his sword belt. However, this account is a later legend rather than established historical evidence. Documentary evidence confirms the use of the red-white-red colours in Austria by the 13th century.
The colours subsequently became strongly associated with Austria and continued through different periods of Austrian history. The red-white-red triband was used by the Republic of German-Austria following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 and was incorporated into the constitutional framework of the First Republic. Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938, after which its national symbols were suppressed. Following the restoration of an independent Austrian state in 1945, the traditional red-white-red colours were restored. Austrian legislation enacted in 1945 specified red-white-red as the colours of the Republic and provided for the national flag used by state authorities to carry the national coat of arms.
Austria's current constitutional law defines the national colours as red-white-red and the national flag as three equal-width horizontal stripes, with white in the centre and red above and below. This distinguishes the plain national flag from the Austrian federal service flag, which additionally displays the national coat of arms.
