The OUTBOUND Heavy Duty Flag of New Zealand is a large-format representation of New Zealand's national flag, featuring the Union Jack in the upper hoist and four red five-pointed stars with white borders forming the Southern Cross on a blue field. Measuring 150 cm x 90 cm, it is suitable for displaying at New Zealand events, sporting occasions, schools, clubs, workplaces, heritage displays and private collections.

The design has its origins in New Zealand's maritime history. Under the British Colonial Naval Defence Act of 1865, colonial government vessels were required to fly the Blue Ensign with a distinctive colonial badge. New Zealand initially had no suitable badge, so the letters "NZ" were used from 1867. In 1869, these were replaced by four red stars with white borders representing the Southern Cross. The new design was initially intended for government vessels but soon became widely used on land as well.

The designer of the 1869 New Zealand flag was Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham, a British explorer, author and Royal Navy officer. The blue background derives from the Blue Ensign, while the Southern Cross reflects New Zealand's position in the South Pacific. The Union Jack reflects New Zealand's historical connection with Britain.

Although the Southern Cross design had been in widespread use for decades, it was formally recognised as New Zealand's national flag in 1902 following the New Zealand Ensign Act 1901. The proclamation of 12 June 1902 confirmed the blue ensign with the Southern Cross as the recognised flag for general use in New Zealand and on government vessels.

The flag has remained New Zealand's national flag since then. A 2015–16 referendum considered whether it should be replaced with a Silver Fern design; voters ultimately chose to retain the existing flag.
