The Queensland State Flag Patch features the distinctive blue flag of Queensland, with the Union Jack in the upper-left corner and the State Badge displayed on the right. The badge consists of a light blue Maltese Cross surmounted by a Royal Crown, set within a white circular background. This embroidered reproduction captures the traditional design in blue, red, white and gold, with a matching blue border.
The history of Queensland's flag dates back to the state's time as a self-governing British colony. In 1865, the British Admiralty advised colonial authorities that Queensland's government vessels should fly the British Blue Ensign incorporating a badge representing the colony. However, Queensland did not yet have an agreed badge for its flag.
An initial proposal featured the head of Queen Victoria, but the Queensland Government considered that the portrait would be too difficult to reproduce clearly on a flag. An alternative design featuring a Maltese Cross with a Royal Crown superimposed was submitted for approval. The British Admiralty approved the design in July 1876, and its adoption was formally notified in the Queensland Government Gazette on 29 November 1876.
The badge is officially described as a white roundel bearing a blue Maltese Cross surmounted by a Royal Crown. It was designed by William Hemmant, who was Queensland's Colonial Secretary and Treasurer at the time. The design has remained the defining feature of Queensland's state flag for nearly 150 years.
