The U.S. Army Tank Destroyer Patch by COMMANDO commemorates one of the more distinctive specialist forces developed by the American Army during the Second World War. The Tank Destroyer Force was created to counter the threat posed by German armoured formations, bringing together specially trained crews, dedicated anti-tank weapons and a doctrine built around finding and engaging enemy tanks. This military-themed morale patch is a fitting addition to collections of World War II memorabilia, U.S. Army history and armoured warfare insignia.
The History of the U.S. Army Tank Destroyer ForceThe rapid German armoured advances across Europe in 1940 exposed the need for a more effective American response to large-scale tank attacks. On 27 November 1941, the U.S. War Department ordered the activation of 53 tank destroyer battalions, with the Tank Destroyer Tactical and Firing Center established to develop their organisation, training and equipment. The new force was formally organised around the principle of concentrating mobile anti-tank units where enemy armour threatened to break through.
Its guiding motto was “Seek, Strike, and Destroy”. Rather than relying solely on fixed defensive anti-tank positions, tank destroyer crews were trained to locate hostile armour, manoeuvre into favourable firing positions and engage with powerful guns. The original doctrine emphasised speed, mobility and aggressive action, with battalions intended to operate as a concentrated reserve supporting larger Army formations.
Tank destroyer units used several different types of equipment during the war. Early vehicles included the M3 Gun Motor Carriage, while the M10 Wolverine became an important self-propelled tank destroyer. Later developments included the exceptionally fast M18 Hellcat and the more heavily armed M36 Jackson. The force also included towed anti-tank gun battalions, so not every unit operated armoured vehicles.
Combat experience in North Africa and Europe led to changes in the original doctrine. Tank destroyers were increasingly employed in close cooperation with infantry, artillery and other armoured units rather than operating independently against massed enemy tanks. Their vehicles and crews served in major campaigns, including the North African, Italian and European theatres.
A total of 106 tank destroyer battalions were activated during the war, although not all entered combat. As the conflict progressed, the Army increasingly integrated anti-tank responsibilities into its wider armoured and infantry formations. The separate Tank Destroyer Force was disbanded after the war, bringing this specialised chapter of American military organisation to a close.
The patch commemorates this distinctive World War II military role and the crews who trained and served in the Tank Destroyer Force.
