The COMMANDO State Flag of Victoria Patch features the official flag of Victoria, with its distinctive dark blue background, Union Jack in the upper-left corner and the Victorian State Badge displayed on the right. The badge consists of five white stars representing the Southern Cross, surmounted by St Edward's Crown.
The Victorian flag has a history dating back to 1870, making Victoria the first Australian colony to adopt its own distinctive flag. Its introduction followed the British Colonial Naval Defence Act of 1865, which allowed Australian colonies to establish and operate their own naval vessels. Colonial warships were required to fly the British Blue Ensign incorporating a badge identifying their colony.
On 4 February 1870, Victoria's Governor proclaimed that the colony's flag badge would feature five white stars representing the Southern Cross. The flag was first reported flying aboard HMVS Nelson, one of Victoria's early colonial warships, during a ceremony in February that year.
The design was modified on 12 November 1877, when a Royal Crown was added above the Southern Cross. Following the accession of King Edward VII in 1901, the crown was changed to St Edward's Crown. This is the crown that remains in the Victorian State Flag today.
The five stars have different numbers of points, ranging from five to eight, reflecting their varying brightness within the Southern Cross constellation. The flag has retained this distinctive design since 1901 and remains an enduring symbol of Victoria's history and identity.
