State Flag of Western Australia Patch by COMMANDO

Condition: NEW
Code:BD0464
The COMMANDO State Flag of Western Australia Patch features the official flag of Western Australia, with its dark blue background, Union Jack in the upper-left corner and distinctive State Badge on the right. The badge depicts a black swan facing towards the flagpole, positioned within a golden-yellow circle.

The black swan has been closely associated with Western Australia since the early days of European exploration and settlement. In 1697, Dutch navigator Willem de Vlamingh encountered large numbers of black swans in the estuary of the river now known as the Swan River. The name subsequently became associated with the region, and the early British settlement established in 1829 became known as the Swan River Colony.

The black swan was adopted as a recognisable emblem of the colony well before the state flag was formally established. It appeared on Western Australia's first postage stamps in 1854 and was used on government documents and other official publications. Its connection with the colony made it a natural choice for the state's flag badge.

Western Australia's flag design dates from 1870, when Governor Frederick Weld proposed a black swan on a yellow background as the colony's identifying emblem. Its use was officially confirmed by Governor William Robinson in 1875. The original design showed the swan facing away from the flagpole. In 1953, its direction was reversed so that it faced towards the flagpole, following heraldic convention. This is the design used on the modern Western Australian State Flag.
