This is an original post-war German Bundesmarine cap top in navy, offered as a surplus replacement component rather than a complete cap. It is a part of the distinctive flat sailors headwear traditionally associated with German naval uniforms and is an interesting piece for military collectors, uniform restorers, historical displays and period costume applications.
The West German naval force was established in 1956 as part of the newly formed Bundeswehr. During the Cold War it became commonly known as the Bundesmarine, although the official service name was simply Marine. Its sailors operated within the NATO alliance, with the force playing an important role in the defence of the North Sea and Baltic approaches. After German reunification in 1990, the former East German Volksmarine was incorporated into the unified German naval force, and the term Bundesmarine was officially discontinued in 1995 in favour of Deutsche Marine.
The flat sailor cap, known in German as a Tellermütze, formed part of the traditional naval uniform for enlisted personnel. The style has a long history in German naval dress, although the post-war Bundesmarine adopted its own insignia and uniform identity rather than simply continuing the traditions of earlier German naval organisations.
