How Long Does Freeze-Dried Food Last?

For commercially packaged freeze-dried foods, the manufacturer's stated shelf life is the best guide. Some specially packaged long-term emergency foods can have shelf lives of 25 years or more, while many outdoor meals have considerably shorter shelf lives.

Once a package has been opened, exposure to air and moisture can significantly reduce its shelf life. For the best quality, consume opened freeze-dried food according to the manufacturer's instructions and keep any unused food sealed and dry.

What Affects Shelf Life?

What Does "Best Before" Mean?

A Best Before date indicates the period during which the manufacturer expects the food to retain its specified quality when stored correctly. It is different from a Use By date, which relates to food safety.

The Best Before date should always be considered alongside the manufacturer's storage instructions and the condition of the packaging.

What If the Food Is Past Its Best Before Date?

Do not use freeze-dried food if the packaging is damaged, swollen, leaking or otherwise compromised. If a product has passed its Best Before date, quality may have deteriorated even if the package remains sealed.

If the food has an unusual smell, visible mould, significant discolouration or an unexpected texture after preparation, discard it rather than eating it.
