Cold Steel, Incorporated was founded in 1980, a company dedicated to making the strongest, sharpest knives in the world. Over the last three decades, Cold Steel has been at the forefront of the many innovations that have helped to define the knife industry as a whole. Progressive accomplishment, including the introduction of the checked Kraton® handles, and the tanto point blade styles have gone from curiously interesting features to industry-wide hallmarks of quality and sophistication. New ground was also broken with the introduction of unique new blade steels like San Mai III® and Tri-Ad™ Lock & locking mechanism for folding knives. Tri-Ad™ Lock for example, has never been equaled by any of Cold Steel's competitors and nothing they have produced yet has been proven to outperform it. Of course Cold Steel will always look to the future, constantly striving to make the world's strongest, sharpest knives. That goal as elusive and difficult to achieve as it is, has been the same for the past forty years.
Cold Steel Inc. is a knife and tool company dedicated to creating the world's strongest, sharpest knives, swords, tomahawks, machetes, cutlery, tools for every day carry: EDC. Quickly adopted by Military, Law Enforcement Special units, Emergency Services Personnel, Self Defense professionals as well as members of the Martial Arts community, Cold Steel quickly became renowned for quality, strength, reliability and dependability in every day carry (EDC). Our diverse and varied line-up quickly grew to include not only a massive selection of folding knives (from smaller "EDC" blades, to our iconic giant “mega-folders”) but fixed blades, swords, sabers, pole-arms and halberds, as well as hunting gear, spears, blowguns, axes, machetes, tomahawks and tools!
Over the decades, Cold Steel has introduced pioneering new materials and designs that have helped to shape the world of the modern knife, edged weapons and tools. From the introduction of the checkered Kraton® handles, and the “Americanized” Tanto blade, to the inclusion of innovative new blade steels like San Mai III® and game-changing locking mechanisms (like our Tri-Ad™ Lock). As we look to the future, Cold Steel continues to bring new levels of strength, safety and performance to the market, providing tried and tested products that you can rely on – Anytime, Anywhere!
About German 4116 Stainless Steel
German 4116 stainless steel, also known as X50CrMoV15 or 1.4116, is a high-quality martensitic stainless steel developed for applications requiring excellent corrosion resistance, toughness and ease of maintenance. Originally produced for the medical and food processing industries, it became widely used for surgical instruments, commercial kitchen knives and food preparation equipment before earning a strong reputation as a dependable blade steel for outdoor and hunting knives.
Manufactured by leading European steel mills, including ThyssenKrupp, 4116 stainless steel offers a well-balanced combination of durability, stain resistance and straightforward sharpening. While it is not designed to compete with premium wear-resistant "super steels", its forgiving nature and reliable all-round performance have made it a popular choice for field knives where ease of maintenance is just as important as edge retention.
Typical Chemical Composition
| Element | Approximate Content | Purpose |
|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.45–0.55% | Provides hardness while maintaining toughness and ease of sharpening. |
| Chromium (Cr) | 14.0–15.0% | Delivers excellent corrosion and stain resistance while forming wear-resistant carbides. |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.50–0.80% | Improves corrosion resistance, strength and wear resistance. |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.10–0.20% | Refines grain structure, improving toughness and edge stability. |
| Manganese (Mn) | Up to 1.0% | Improves hardenability and manufacturing consistency. |
| Silicon (Si) | Up to 1.0% | Increases strength and assists during steel production. |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.04% (max) | Controlled to maintain toughness. |
| Sulphur (S) | 0.015% (max) | Kept to very low levels to preserve strength and improve steel quality. |
Composition may vary slightly between steel manufacturers while remaining within the recognised 1.4116 specification.
Advantages of German 4116 Stainless Steel
- Excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for wet, humid and marine environments.
- Tougher than many higher-carbon stainless steels, reducing the risk of chipping during demanding use.
- Easy to sharpen using conventional sharpening stones and field sharpeners.
- Takes a fine, keen edge suitable for hunting, food preparation and general utility tasks.
- Good edge retention for everyday outdoor and field use.
- Widely used by respected European knife manufacturers and trusted for professional food preparation and outdoor applications.
- Well suited to hunting, camping, bushcraft and survival knives requiring dependable all-round performance.
Disadvantages of German 4116 Stainless Steel
- Edge retention is lower than premium high-carbon stainless steels such as 154CM, CPM S35VN or MagnaCut.
- Requires more frequent sharpening during prolonged heavy cutting compared to modern wear-resistant steels.
- Not intended for extreme abrasion resistance or extended industrial cutting applications.
- Although highly corrosion resistant, regular cleaning and drying will help maximise the blade's service life.
Heat Treatment and Performance
German 4116 stainless steel is commonly heat treated to a hardness of approximately 55–57 HRC, although some manufacturers harden it slightly higher depending on the intended application. At this hardness, it provides an excellent balance of toughness, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening, making it particularly well suited to knives that see regular outdoor use and require simple field maintenance.
Why Knife Manufacturers Choose German 4116 Stainless Steel
German 4116 stainless steel has become a benchmark for dependable outdoor and hunting knives because it offers practical performance where it matters most. Rather than prioritising maximum hardness or extreme edge retention, it delivers a balanced combination of corrosion resistance, toughness and easy maintenance that suits real-world use.
For campers, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts who value a knife that resists rust, sharpens quickly and performs reliably in the field, German 4116 stainless steel remains one of the most practical and trusted blade steels available.
