CPM S35VN Stainless Steel
CPM S35VN is a premium martensitic stainless steel developed by Crucible Industries using the Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process. Introduced as an evolution of CPM S30V, it was designed to improve toughness while maintaining the excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance that made its predecessor popular. The fine, uniform grain structure produced by the CPM process results in a steel that performs consistently under demanding conditions.
Typical Composition
- Carbon (C): 1.38%
- Chromium (Cr): 14.00%
- Vanadium (V): 3.00%
- Niobium (Nb): 0.50%
- Molybdenum (Mo): 2.00%
Advantages
- Excellent edge retention for prolonged cutting performance.
- Outstanding toughness with improved resistance to chipping compared to CPM S30V.
- Very good corrosion resistance, making it suitable for wet and humid environments.
- Fine grain structure provides excellent strength and durability.
- Easier to sharpen than many other premium powdered stainless steels.
- Well suited to hard-use outdoor, hunting, tactical and everyday carry knives.
Disadvantages
- More difficult to sharpen than conventional stainless steels such as 440C or AUS-8.
- Higher manufacturing cost results in more expensive knives.
- While highly corrosion resistant, regular cleaning and maintenance are still recommended after exposure to salt water or corrosive environments.
Summary
CPM S35VN is widely regarded as one of the best all-round premium knife steels available. Its combination of edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance makes it an outstanding choice for users who want a dependable blade capable of handling demanding outdoor, tactical and everyday cutting tasks with minimal maintenance.
