M9 Design Comparison
The BY0013 follows several of the distinctive visual characteristics associated with the genuine US M9 bayonet. The product images show the broad blade profile, serrated spine, blade opening, crossguard, textured handle and purpose-designed scabbard that are characteristic of the M9 pattern. The 178 mm blade length is also essentially the same as the seven-inch blade dimension associated with the M9.
There are important distinctions, however. BY0013 is an M9A-style reproduction by COMMANDO and should not be represented as a genuine US military M9 bayonet. The genuine M9 was developed as a multipurpose military bayonet and field knife, with its military specification covering a system that incorporated bayonet, field-craft, combat-knife and wire-cutter functions. The physical appearance of this reproduction should therefore not be taken as confirmation of equivalent military specification, construction or compatibility.
History of the Genuine M9 Bayonet
The genuine M9 was developed for the US military as the successor to the M7 bayonet. The US Army identifies the M9 as entering Army service in 1987, while historical US Army material records the introduction of the new M9 as part of the late-1980s transition from the M7. Unlike a conventional bayonet intended primarily for attachment to a rifle, the M9 was conceived as a multipurpose tool, combining bayonet and field-knife functions with a wire-cutting capability. The design incorporated a serrated section on the blade and a specialised scabbard that formed part of the wire-cutter system. The M9 subsequently became associated with US military rifles including the M16 family and M4 carbine.
The COMMANDO M9A Style Bayonet captures the recognisable form of this influential military design while being clearly presented as a reproduction. Its substantial dimensions, stainless-steel blade, textured handle and accompanying scabbard make it particularly suited to military collections, re-enactment displays and enthusiasts of modern military equipment
